Richard Mayhew is an American painter, best known for his rainbow-colored landscape paintings. His fluorescent depictions of the American countryside tackle ideas surrounding African-American identity, jazz music, and Abstract Expressionism. “Landscape has no space, no identity,” he once said. Born on April 3, 1924 in Amityville, NY, Mayhew made his first contact with contemporary art through the famed New York hangout Cedar Bar, where Abstract Expressionist painters like < ahref="/artists/willem-de-kooning/">Wilhelm de Kooning would gather. These artists encouraged Mayhew to pursue and experiment in his art, influencing his technique and worldview. His body of work is based on his extensive travels throughout the United States, and he was notably a member of the Black painters' collective "Spiral," including other members such as Romare Bearden and Hale Woodruff.

Sam Gilliam is an African-American painter associated with both the Washington Color School movement. Gilliam’s hallmark “drape paintings,” which consist of stained fabric or paper resembling tie-dye, are regarded as a major step in the development of American art. “We need to continue to think about the whole of what art is, what it does,” he has explained. “Even though my work is not overtly political, I believe art has the ability to call attention to politics and to remind us of this potential through its presence.” Born in Tupelo, MI, on November 30, 1933, he grew up in Kentucky and graduated with a BFA from the University of Louisville in 1955. In 1962, the artist moved to Washington, D.C., where he supported himself teaching at public schools. Inspired by Yves Klein, Morris Louis, and laundry hanging on clotheslines seen from his studio window, the artist began experimenting with folding and draping canvases. In the decades that followed, Gilliam moved through a variety of techniques, incorporating metal forms, thickly applied paint, and quilt-like pattering. In 2005, a major retrospective of his work was held at the now defunct Corcoran Gallery of Art. The artist continues to live and work in Washington, D.C. Today, Gilliam’s works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the Tate Modern in London, among others.

Danny Simmons, Jr., is an American abstract painter, poet, and author. He strives to use painting as a spiritual conduit, and many of his works connect tribal musings to modern society. Much like modernists, he reworks or reimagines tribal paintings and markings into a modern context. His current work is inspired by textiles, and the artist uses dots, circles, and interconnected lines to form an abstract painting landscape. Simmons is also a poet and co-producer of the hit HBO series Def Poetry Jam with his sibling Russell Simmons.

Willie Cole (American, b. 1955) is known for his mixed media sculptures that focus on the cultures of West Africa. His upbringing by both his mother and grandmother in the 1960s has had a lasting impact on his work, as his continued use of irons in his sculptures signifies the domestic role of African women during this time. His fascination with African art developed as he continued his education at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he studied the culture of the Yoruba society.
